We had another long, hot (but often wet, much needed in the country) summer & before we know it...autumn has arrived with all the gorgeous shades only this season can produce. There is a field of trees, just past the oyster place, that has a variety of trees, which is just an absolute picture of red, green, yellow & orange at this time of year.
Thursday 2nd Sheri & Steve arrived back from 2 years in the UK & travelling all over. They are back for 2 weeks & Sheri is in Megan & Phil's bridal party on Easter Sunday so looking forward to that. In the meantime 'R Buzz' is off to Melbourne on Thurs (at the crack of dawn) to support Lisa as she enters the church. I would SO love to be going also but had already replied to M&P's wedding invitation. Its great Ross can go though. Its such a special time for Lisa & Blair. "Our little man" Callen turned ONE on Saturday :) WHERE did that year go to? They were over in March so we had an early NZ birthday lunch for him at their Redoubt home. I stayed about 3 nights which was great having the time to spend with them all.
The 5 other grandkids are all growing 'like mushrooms' & its great getting updates on them all. They will be teens before we know it? Well time for a cuppa (& maybe an Easter egg :) Toodles!!

Two more sleeps to 2009...where did 2008 go to?
WHERE has this year gone? Happy BELATED Christmas greetings!! I am totally ashamed I have only managed to write a few blogs this year. My excuse is...the year went way too quick? (& 5 trips to Oz didn't help...but was GREAT for me!!!)
We had a wonderful Christmas Day with Blair, Lisa & Callen (8 1/2 months). It was awesome to share his first Christmas & see the delight on his cute little face when the presents were opened. I do think he enjoyed the wrapping paper best though. We all went to Mass at our Howick church, with Mum, Lynne, her 3rd son David & Larry, then back to Laz's for morning tea before coming back home, hoping all the way the turkey in the oven (on low) wasn't overdone...& it wasn't...it was PERFECT!! (Finally finished it yesterday!!)
Before B&L&C arrived I tried to 'baby proof' the living area...but really needed have worried. Even though Callen is crawling it is easy to dissuade him from heading places he shouldn't go & keep him entertained. He is a real delight & such a good little guy!! A friend had lent me a playpen for the Christmas tree to go in but we ended up needing to use it for Callen the first night as his porta-cot got left at Redoubt Road....oops? Blair met his mate for a bike ride next day so bought it back. They are camping down at the Lake this week & will probably be back by Friday.
Ross is back at work so it is VERY quiet round here. We have had a lot of traffic pass this way since the holidays started & seen some very strange sights ie...a caravan body mounted on the back of a truck deck...actually I saw two different types...Kiwi inginuity at its best. Also camper vans towing anything from smaller vehicles to boats or 'storage on wheels'. Lots of cyclists, some out on serious rides, others on fun rides, along with the tourists, all packed up with their gear!
We took Callen down to the beach on Boxing Day & Lis got some great pics. Its a pity I can't 'post' pics on my blog. I think its because our internet speed is 'snail slow'???(better than it used to be...but still slow by city standards).
Saturday arvo a couple drove up & booked into the unit for the night so that was a bit of a bonus. This time last year we had the Polish family of 4 who booked in for SIX WEEKS. We are pretty certain that won't happen again. At least this Christmas we have had a bit of rain to keep the tanks 'topped up' unlike last summer when we went for 6 weeks with non? Also we have 4 calves in the paddocks & the grass growth is slowing down very quickly...yikes?
Time for a cuppa & some Christmas cake. Its good I made TWO, the way we have gone through the first one. Toodles till 2009 & HAPPY NEW YEAR. May it be a good one for you & yours!!

Movember already?
Yes...Movember. It seems to be a yearly thing here now with guys growing mo's in support of prostate cancer. Ross grew back his mo when Blair was born - 31 years ago - & has never shaved it off so all the 'hoo haa' about mo's doesnt affect me one bit. I've lived with one for MANY years!
Last night, more importantly, we had a change in Government in N.Z. YAY...National got in & hopefully will follow through with pre-election promises. It was GREAT to see Barack Obama win the U.S. Presidency. What a 'breath of fresh air' for the Americans. He is such a gifted orator. It will be a hard road ahead but he sure seems to be the right guy for the job. Hopefully, John Key can do the same for us! It will be interesting to see who will take over the Labour party leadership now Clarke & Cullen have both resigned. My guess is Phil Goff for the top job. Will be watching!
Meanwhile, down on the land, our 3 calves continue to chomp through the paddocks and have very rounded bellies. The female, Jumper (as Ross named her), is VERY friendly & even comes up to me for head pats now. The others are a little more timid. I DID plan NOT to 'get up close & personal' with these ones, as it took me 2 weeks to get over Limo & Zinny 'going to that big paddock in the sky' in December :=( But Jumper has such a sunny spirit & THE cutest face. I wish I could post pics on my blog but it just doesnt work. The bigger calf, who we are apparently 'fattening up' to go halves in (we'll see?) never seems to stop eating & is bulking up fast. I hope we dont have a drought like last summer though. We could be in trouble otherwise. Will cross that bridge when we come to it.
Christmas is 6 weeks on Thursday...(scary thought #1). Doesnt seem anytime since the last one. Blair, Lis & Callen will be here. SO looking forward to watching Callen with ALL his pressies. I guarantee he will be more interested in the wrapping paper, as they tend to be under a year old. He is SO cute & I miss him heaps...along with the other 5 grandkids, who are all growing up TOO fast.
It was just wonderful to be at Manny & Katya's 10th birthday celebrations this year. Where have those 10 years gone? They will be teenagers before we know it. (Scary thought #2) Manny continues to enjoy soccer & his team came 2nd in Melbourne in September, which was just great! Jay enjoys flipper ball (played in a heated pool) & enjoyed going go-karting with Tom & Blair in Melb in September. He is as tall as Manny & turns 9 next month. Katya, Emra (7) & Gianna (4) all enjoy their dancing & are practicing for their end of year concert. Luckily Chanel doesnt have as many costumes to make this year. She made about 9 for Katya, alone, last year....phew? They love putting on concerts for us which are always a lot of fun! Well must go & put some plant food on the new vege plants and some indoor plants as well. Enjoy your week!

Spring In September
I know I say it every year, but this year has literally 'raced away'?? I have been lucky enough to have 4 trips to Oz with one to go...tomorrow week when I go to Brisbane to help Gary look after the girls while Chanel is in China visiting her American friend, Heidi, who is living there with her family for a year or 2. I am looking forward to seeing the girls again. We were all fortunate enough, with the exception of Sheri & Steve, (who had gone back to the UK to continue travelling,) to be together last month for Callen's Christening in Melbourne. We had 'the best' time at Blair & Lisa's. There was so much to do to keep everyone entertained...home entertainment system with lots of games etc, table tennis, spa pool (too cold for the big pool). The older kids picked up the table tennis really quickly & we all enjoyed playing with or against them! Of course good food was always 'the order of the day'. We are blessed with very good cooks in our family so no one starves and if they do...its their own fault!
July we all got together at our place to celebrate RB's 60th. Where have those years gone? He was 22 when I first met him? Scary thought really. He organised a helicopter ride for the Sunday & it was totally awesome going up in it. NOW I want a helicopter!!! Fat chance!
June started off with sadness. Dave passed away on 3rd, 5 weeks after being told by the Doctor at Middlemore Hospital. We were in a state of shock for weeks after. Sue has a brand new studio unit at Elmwood Village & is settling in well.
Later in June I spent 2 weeks with Lisa & Callen, while B was in Germany, then flew back here with them for the birthday celebrations! You get LOTS of perks flying with a bub...totally recommend it!! He was so good & wore the headphones to watch 'Finding Nemo'...too cute when he wasn't sleeping!
While I was in Melbourne, I received an email from Eva, N.Z. 'Thats Life!' magazine editor asking if I would like to write a weekly column. It is being run fortnightly at present, much better for me, as weekly does put a bit of pressure on!
This winter was SO wet, the hill at the beginning of Kawakawa Bay gave way, which led to the main route being CLOSED & its stayed that way for a month now? SO annoying & makes for a VERY long trip to work via the Bombay Hills, but can't do anything about it. The Council started this week using a helicopter to waterblast the hill with monsoon buckets & do hope to have the road re opened to one lane in about 2 weeks. But we won't get too excited as they have moved very slowly to date? Consequently no through traffic are passing by us, which means no guests in the homestay unit.
Friday 12th September, saw Ross have a sinus operation at last. It had been postponed a couple of times. Within days he was feeling good again and will probably go back to work on Monday! I am sure he doesn't snore anymore either so thats a good thing. Can't say the same about me? Maybe I need my sinuses scrapped too? A good thing behind us thats for sure!
Time to sign off and get the washing in, prepare dinner and feed Taz. He is letting me know it must be his dinner time!

Autumn is here...winter is on its way!
WHERE has this year gone? Don't I say that every year!! 7 weeks ago yesterday our family was blessed with the arrival of Callen Blair Brydon, in Melbourne. After a long, arduous labour which ended in a C section delivery, our 'little man' made his appearance. He certainly looked a bit battered & bruised but after a day or 3, he looked just gorgeous. Lisa is just wonderful keeping us informed with 'just about daily' updates. Callen is growing so fast & has the 'Brydon Family Sleeping Through Record' beating his Auntie Chanel by a week. Well done little man!!!
26 more sleeps until I go over & finally get to meet him & have LOTS of cuddles & stroller walks (weather permitting). We had a sad start to the year with Dave being unwell from February. After various tests etc he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sue stayed with us for nearly 2 weeks & she was a joy to have. She is such a positive, inspiring person, after having a stroke in her 40's nearly 18 years ago. Dave has been her full time carer so it was urgent that the family get them accomodation where they could be together for Dave's last months. Elmwood Village, Manurewa came up trumps. My dear dad in law Bert, spent the last 3 weeks of his life there & was the first person to pass away in their new 'Whanau Room'. Sue has settled in really well & enjoying her twice weekly outings with her lovely friend Belle as well as other outings with family & friends.
Yesterday we took delivery of 3 little Limosin calves (2 brown & 1 darker brown with a white 'hoop' around its tummy...too cute) and an 18 month old, who oversees the little ones. Ross spent from 7-9am this morning rounding them up as the 3 little ones kept jumping over the electric fence. Ross got a few zaps too...it was seriously funny to watch. I couldn't offer my assistance as I have had a head cold all week & the wind is VERY cold. Looking out the window at them now, it looks like they have settled down for naps. For how long...is the question!! We are going to Barry & Rosemary's, down the road, who bred them for morning tea soon & I BET when we get back, they will be 'out' again!!
The best news after Callen's birth so far this year is ALL 4 of our treasured kids are 'coming home' to help Ross celebrate his 60th the first weekend in July. Lisa, Callen & I fly back from Melbourne on 2nd July. Sheri & Steve arrive from Dubai on 3rd, also Raelene, followed by Chanel on 4th (my birthday) then Blair back from Germany on 5th. So its going to be a busy but WONDERFUL time. Well gotta go get dressed to go out. Will 'chat' again. Love to you all. XOXO

1st March 2008
HIYA....It wasn't through 'want of trying' it has taken me this long to blog??? A belated HAPPY NEW YEAR anyway & hope 2008 has been good to you so far!!
The unit has been busy so far this year which is good as the winter slows right down & doesn't 'get moving' again until about September. Most of the people who stay are overseas travellers. We have been fortunate to meet people from Germany, Poland, Finland and the U.K. so far with a few Kiwis as well.
The year got off to a sad start with the sudden death of a cousin, Geoff, who was a year younger than me? My auntie has now buried both her sons as Nick died over 15 years ago before he turned 30. She has a great spirit through the tons of adversity she has experienced in her life & I always enjoy chatting with her.
Raelene continued to have health problems through Christmas & the New Year & finally had an operation for endometriosis, followed 5 days later by Sheridan having the same op (plus appendix out) in London. Too bizarre for words really? Ra had a couple of set-backs so I flew over on 10th Feb to Melbourne, where I had a 10 hour wait for my connecting flight to Hobart. I thought I had it all sussed as was planning to check my suitcase in & catch a bus into Melbourne for the day. But this was not to be as they wouldn't book it in until 4pm due to security reasons, which these days, I could totally understand, but did wonder how many others end up in the same predictament. I didn't fancy lugging my case all over Melb City thats for sure so stayed put at the airport going on walks here & there, people watching, having lunch at Subway, where I met a lovely physically disabled lady, who travels constantly, a true inspiration really!!! As she is coming to NZ in April I gave her out homestay details & hope to meet up with her again. A brain tumour op had left her with a stroke, hence the need for the wheelchair. We had an enjoyable lunch together & she went off to await the arrival of her sister from another State.
Meanwhile in London, Sheridan was recovering well & went back to work a week after her op. Steve just became an uncle to a 9lb baby boy his sister gave birth to this week in Brisbane! S&S are off to New York for a week in a day or so as they had to cancel their trip to Austria when Sheri was in hospital.
Blair & Lisa celebrate their 1st wedding anniversary tomorrow!!! (WHERE has that year gone?) They await the birth of their 1st baby, due in about 3 weeks. Can't wait to get the call!!! Being able to spend 2 days with them last weekend was a big bonus after spending 12 days with Raelene, Manny & Jay. Tom was away with his job a lot of the time but cooked great barbeques and helped out wherever he could. The boys are growing tall, actually Jay is now taller than his older brother by a few centimetres. It was going to happen!!! R&T reckon he will be taller than over 6ft Tom when he finishes growing & I am sure they are right!! An added bonus of my time in Hobart, was Chanel arriving on 21st for 3 nights. She bought her lap top so we 'skyped' Sheri & had a great chat that night!! The morning I left for Melb, us girls dropped the boys at school then went to a lovely cafe in Hobart for a cooked breakfast. Too Yum for words & so lovely spending this precious time with 'my big girls'!!! Blair & Lisa had only moved into their new home in Beaconsfield, complete with pool and spa. Pup, as always was SO excited to see me. She is a fun little dog!! Rb coped beautifully while I was away & it was good to see him again!! This
morning we woke to heavy rain which meant the 2 big tanks were FILLED in no time & I was spoilt with brekky in bed, 10/10 it was too, never ended up rising until NOON. I haven't done that for years!! But the perfect morning to do it, thats for sure!
We know 3 couples who are away this weekend so hope the wet weather isn't making it unpleasant for them. It actually hasn't rained here since lunchtime but is very misty looking on the horizon.
We still feel like we are on holiday every day living here & I shudder when I see the new sub-divisions going up at Dannemora & how close the houses are being built? There is something to be said for a bit of space alright.

R&T reckon he will be taller than over 6ft Tom when he finishes growing & I am sure they are right!! An added bonus of my time in Hobart, was Chanel arriving on 21st for 3 nights. She bought her lap top so we 'skyped' Sheri & had a great chat that night!! The morning I left for Melb, us girls dropped the boys at school then went to a lovely cafe in Hobart for a cooked breakfast. Too Yum for words & so lovely spending this precious time with 'my big girls'!!! Blair & Lisa had only moved into their new home in Beaconsfield, complete with pool and spa. Pup, as always was SO excited to see me. She is a fun little dog!! Rb coped beautifully while I was away & it was good to see him again!! This
morning we woke to heavy rain which meant the 2 big tanks were FILLED in no time & I was spoilt with brekky in bed, 10/10 it was too, never ended up rising until NOON. I haven't done that for years!! But the perfect morning to do it, thats for sure!
We know 3 couples who are away this weekend so hope the wet weather isn't making it unpleasant for them. It actually hasn't rained here since lunchtime but is very misty looking on the horizon.
We still feel like we are on holiday every day living here & I shudder when I see the new sub-divisions going up at Dannemora & how close the houses are being built? There is something to be said for a bit of space alright.
Time to marinate the chicken pieces. Toodles!!

8 more Sleeps till ANOTHER Christmas!!!
Oops...I've done it again...not updated by blog for awhile. Got the 'hurry up' from my favourite daughter-in-law!!! So here goes Lis!!!
The last week has had its highs & lows. The highs - we have guests staying in the homestay unit for nearly 6 weeks!! They are a family of 4 from Poland & lovely people. The parents don't speak english but the daughter & her partner are fluent so thats been helpful! Last night we also had a lovely retired couple park overnight in their new luxury camper. They have rented out their home in Whangaparoa & are travelling the country. They plan to come back our way in May! Its great meeting all the different types of people that exist in our world. Thankfully all that have stayed so far have been friendly & happy people who enjoy life!! Thats what its all about!!
The low point of last week was saying 'goodbye' to our 2 resident Limousin Steers, Limo & Zinny :( I think I shed a tear every day until the weekend, everytime I thought about them or looked at our empty paddock :( I just hated the thought they would be going to 'the works' & tried to kid myself a nice farmer might have bought them to graze on his lush land but I know what really happened & that was the hard part? They were such good mates so I guess its good they both went together. We had an offer on Limo only but said 'no'. Zinny would have been 'lost' without 'he aint heavy...he's my brother' Limo. The funny thing is they both weighed the same. Size IS deceiving. They did have a charmed 17 months with us & were very tame. We could pat them & they would eat hay out of our hands. Even the grandkids could walk up to them in the paddock & they wouldn't move an inch. Yes....I DO miss 'the boys' & aren't keen to get any more. I didn't realise how awful I would feel seeing them go :(
Christmas is next week. This year has raced away, but don't they all. I tried to reduce the number of cards I sent this year, opting to email or phone as many as possible. It didn't seem to matter, the list still grew?
Time for lunch & a cuppa or 2. Hope your day goes well. XOXOXO
